"Not only is it important that Jesus is a man, it is also important that he is a heterosexual male."
"Healthy heterosexual men are sure to be put off by not knowing if homosexuals will be admitted to the seminary"
A brief synopsis adapted from the article by Father Regis Scanlon, O.F.M. Cap, the Jesus - Christ believing Archbishop Chaput's hand - picked Archdiocesan Director of Prison Ministry, in this month's Homiletic & Pastoral Review, April 2009, titled "Should all homosexuals be barred from the seminary?"
"It would be better to consider the problem from the point of view of morality, i.e., temptation and sin.
"Traditionally, seminarians only shared close quarters with other men in preparation for the priesthood.
"Seminarians, like other healthy males, were sexually attracted to women and subject to sexual temptations and fantasies about women.
"If these seminarians had lived in close quarters with women, they would have deliberately and imprudently entered an occasion of sin.
"Not only is it important that Jesus is a man, it is also important that he is a heterosexual male.
"Healthy heterosexual men, therefore, are sure to be put off by not knowing if homosexuals will be admitted to the seminary.
"Consequently, many will have grave reservations about coming to the seminary.
"Those who do [as most assuredly must have been the case in the Archdiocese of San Antonio's own seminary during Archbishop Flores anything goes administration!] come may well discover a tense atmosphere dominated by dissembling and cliques due to the presence of both heterosexual and homosexual men and the ambiguity about the acceptance of homosexuals in the seminary."
Fr. Scanlon: two good books books on this issue!
"One only has to read two books, The Changing Face of the Priesthood by Rev. Donald B. Cozzens and Goodbye, Good Men by Michael S. Rose, to understand the difficulties present in seminaries attended by both homosexuals and heterosexuals.
"Responsible heterosexual candidates for the priesthood want to know if the Church has decided to permit any homosexual men to study for the priesthood.
"The Catholic bishops of the United States and elsewhere must urge Cardinal Bertone and the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education to make it absolutely clear that all homosexuals are barred from entering the seminary for their own sake and for the sake of the entire Church.
"This absolute ban on all homosexuals entering the seminary must be made known publicly throughout the entire Church.
"When this is done, the number of healthy heterosexual men applying to the seminary is sure to increase."
You bet!
Well said, padre! :)
