"The leftist president of Paraguay has admitted that he fathered a child while he was still acting as Catholic bishop.

"According to local media reports, Fernando Lugo Méndez began a relationship with a young woman, now 26, after he had been appointed bishop of San Pedro.

"The woman bore his child in 2007.

"Lugo remained a bishop until his laicization in July 2008 -- two weeks before his presidential inauguration.

"But the flow of bad news continued, as a second woman and then a third came forward to claim that Lugo had fathered their children.

"Struggling to convince his people that he could be a faithful leader, he [Lugo] evoked the theme of fatherhood, saying: You will see this president as a father who is prepared to share his love and care."
