Yours truly's own knee - jerk reaction has long been that this forthright declaration so enraged the high - ranking Vatican members of the Catholic church's Lavender Mafia clique that they promptly torpedoed this handsome and charismatic African - American bishop's chance to ever have a Cardinal's red hat! :(
