"He had expensive tastes, a bland smile, a great deal of cunning and an instinct for treachery.

"These qualities, allied to his impassive handsomeness and impressive bearing, had kept him out of reach of the law since his first venture into larceny, but he had not yet achieved the goal of all thieves, the big killing, the prize great enough to keep him in luxury for the rest of his days.

"Today he hoped to make it..."

Man, oh man! This story keeps on getting better and better.... :)
