"A Slovenian prelate has resigned, prompted by a reportedly disastrous financial situation in his archdiocese.

"The Vatican announced on February 3 that Archbishop Franc Kramberger of Maribor had resigned, citing section 401 - 2 of the Code of Canon Law.

"That canon provides for the resignation of a bishop who is deemed unfit for office because of illness or other grave reasons.

"He was succeeded by Archbishop Marjan Turnsek, who was appointed last November as his coadjutor.

"The Vatican had appointed an apostolic visitor last year to investigate reports that the Maribor archdiocese had accumulated a crippling burden of debt.

"The archdiocese was heavily invested in firms that have declared bankruptcy..."
