From last week's San Antonio EXPRESS - NEWS, Wednesday July 7, 2010.

"Medicare chief to be slipped in"

"President Barack Obama intends to use the congressional recess to bypass the Senate and appoint Dr. Donald Berwick, an expert on patient care who's drawn fire from the GOP, to oversee Medicare and Medicaid, a White House official said Tuesday.

"
The appointment was expected to be made today, with lawmakers out of town on their July Fourth break."

Now:

From the S.A. EXPRESS News headlines for Friday, July 9, 2010.

"Laredo sees worst flooding in decades"

On page six's side bar Highest river crests in Laredo we read:

"According to historical data from the National Weather Service, the Rio Grande's level Thursday night was the third highest [ever recorded] in Laredo.

"January 1, 1965: 62.48 feet.

"June 30, 1954: 61.35 feet.*

"July 8, 2010: 42.45 feet."

*Hurricane Alice?

You bet!

And:

Six or seven months later the "temporary" pontoon bridge connecting Los Dos Laredos was still in operation -- if yours truly's memory is correct, at least up to when most of our own family left Laredo by mid - May 1955, to return to the 'ole Rancho.

For all the 200th anniversary bash of the founding of Laredo Texas was that same late winter - early spring of 1955.

Man!

Was that EVER a swell party! :)
