"Dear Dennis,

"In an effort to facilitate the Appeal process and promote success in meeting our increased Archdiocesan goal, we made some adjustments to the 2010 Archbishop's Appeal.

"As a result, more than 4,000 new donors participated in the Appeal this year, assisting our ministries in reaching out to our brothers and sisters in need throughout our Archdiocese.

"A goal is given to each parish in the Archdiocese of San Antonio and although we collectively reached our goal of $3.5 million by collecting more than $3.6 million in gifts and pledges, approximately 5% of pledges are not collected each year causing a shortfall of around $200,000.

"Additionally, the gifts and pledges collected are further reduced by parish rebates of approximately $150,000 to $200,000 each year.

"Parish Rebates are given to those parishes that have exceeded their parish goal and consist of 50% of the amount over goal which is returned to the parish as an incentive.

"The total amount pledged of $3.6 million, after calculating the above - mentioned anticipated shortfall and paying the parish rebates, is projected to result in the Archdiocese of San Antonio having to cut its ministry funding by 10%.

"If you are looking for an opportunity to make a year - end contribution, please consider contributing to the 2010 Archbishop's Appeal which will reduce this deficit and get us closer to our goal of fully funding our ministries.

Humm .. o.k.! But it's like this, Excellency: "we" have already shelled out $2,453.50 to the 2010 Archbishop's Appeal.

And as for those so - called Parish Rebates, heck that sounds like plain 'ole mordida.
