Pastor Jeff Janca's: "A Revolutionary War Hero"

The Brackett News, Thursday, January 24, 2008.

"As I was reading the other day I came across an unknown hero of the American Revolutionary War [roughly 1775 to 1783]."

"We of course know the familiar names of Washington and Lafayette but one man in particular helped Americans to win the war.

"His nme was James Armistead.

"James Armistead was a slave in Virginia.

"He wanted to serve and help fight the British.

"James served under General Lafayette.

"Lafayette sent James to a British army camp where he pretended to be a runaway slave.

"James Armistead is credited with giving vital information to Generals Lafayette and Washington that helped defeat the British at the Battle of Yorktown.

"After the war, Armistead was given his freedom and also a retirement pension from the State of Virginia for his military service.

"Our American History is full of men and women of all races and creeds who have stepped up in our time of need and served our country.

"They have risked and laid down their lives to keep America free.

"We have so much to be thankful for here in America.

"May we never take our freedoms and liberties for granted.

"God Bless America."
