"Youth & Antipsychotic Meds"

Source: Acres U.S.A. The Voice of Eco - Agriculture, October 2007.

"Prescribing antipsychotic medications for children and adolescents in the United States increased nearly 6 times between 1993 and 2002, according to a new survey.

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved only three antipsychotic drugs -- haloperidol, thioridazine hydrochloride, and pimozide -- for use in patients younger than 18 years, yet most of the prescriptions written were for newer medications."

Clozapine, Risperidone, Olanzapine, and Quetiapine

"Approximately 90 percent of the antipsychotics prescribed were for the second generation drugs -- clozapine, risperidone, olanzapine, and quetiapine.

"None of these drugs are approved for treating adolescents or children. (See this month's interview for more information)."
