"Glitzy new buildings can't outshine campus heritage"
And The UTEP Prospector's Ms. Vanessa Juarez has the story!
¡Adelante, Vanessa!
Excerpt from original article published (online) Wednesday, July 21, 2010.
"Today's front page is shared by a story on the exciting new expansion of the Swimming and Fitness Center and another article about a historic campus gem still being used by students for research.
"Placing those stories side by side was completely coincidental and I didn't even realize the symbolic significance of it until I began to think about how important remembering our campus heritage is just as UTEP, full of ambitions and big dreams, steps into the future.
"I can't help but appreciate historical buildings like the Kidd Memorial Seismological Observatory, which was completed in 1957.
"The hallways of Old Main, one of the original buildings constructed as part of the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1914, are still frequently treaded by students who have class there.
"Everyday we sit in the same classrooms that students living through the Great Depression, World War II and the Vietnam War did.
"For me at least, it's inspiring to know that I'm part of a long tradition of Miners from UTEP and that I'm enjoying the same campus they did.
"When I was a young girl, I remember going on field trips to UTEP and being amazed at how it sprawled for acres.
"UTEP has certainly changed since then and will continue to.
"In the midst of all that that excitement for what the future holds, it's important to never forget where we came from and how deep our roots run..."
Way, to go, Vanessa! :)
¡Ora, UTEP!
¡Ora, MEChA!
¡Adelante, DESTINO!
