Ray Suarez, interviewed today by NPR'S Robert Siegel:

Book title: The Holy Vote

Sound-bite adaptation of bootlegged excerpt: From UTEP FM 88.5

Siegel: "I think you write approvingly of Virginia Governor Jim Cain [sp?], who said in his campaign that as a Roman Catholic, capital punishment violated his faith and the teachings of his church. But as Governor, if he were obliged to execute somebody under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia he would do so. Is it admirable to say, I deeply believe this is wrong, but if you elect me... I'll do it?"

Suarez: "[Well?] I wasn't approving of Jim Cain's straddling as much as fascinated by it. Because all the energy in frankly religious messages in campaigns recently has been on the other side of the ledger."

"In the New Testament the right of the State to put criminals to death seems to be taken for granted... Jesus commends the good thief on the cross next to him, who has admitted that he and his fellow thief are receiving the due reward of their deeds (Luke 23.41)."

GOOD POINT!!
