Chicken Little flees Port Arthur ahead of Gustav, makes it!
¡Ora, UTEP! ¡Adelante, DESTINO! ¡Ora, MEChA!
Let's start this September 2009 off with a real feel - good story!! :)
Adapted from this source: Colin McDonald's article in Monday's San Antonio Express - News, "Evacuees' pets finding a safe haven at Stinson."
"The chicken was wandering the streets of Port Arthur last week when José Barragan decided to take it in.
"Then came Hurricane Gustav.
"There was no question that the Barragan family had to leave.
"Three adults, three kids, four dogs, a set of golf clubs and the chicken were squeezed into a Chevy Silverado pickup, and Barragan drove for two days to reach San Antonio.
"Barragan said, explaining why he could not leave the latest addition to his family. Every time I see it, it runs up to me to feed it.
"By Sunday, more than 100 cats and dogs, an iguana, a parakeet and Barragan's chicken were being housed in Hangar 80 at Stinson Municipal Airport.
"Workers lined up the cage on the concrete floor of the hangar.
"At one end was Barragan's chicken.
"After the volunteers gave the bird a bit of water and fresh seed, it ran around its cage and seemed happy.
"Then, while the dogs howled, it stuck its head under its food dish, waiting for Hurricane Gustav to pass and the chance to go home."
¡Guau! Wow! :)
