"UTEP is a gay friendly campus"

Mr. Jesus Smith lays it on the line in this editorial for The UTEP Prospector, October 28, 2008.

"I was asked recently by a reporter whether or not I felt UTEP is a safe campus for the queer community.

"I did not know what to say.

"While I still believe UTEP has a tremendously long path ahead of itself in terms of queer programming and queer student outreach.

"I do think there is a change happening at a fantastic rate here on campus.

"I thought of the Rainbow graduation reception held last spring to honor the many queer students who don't have family to celebrate due to the fact that they disclosed their sexuality and were rejected.

"I think of the queer classes hosted by the Woman's Studies Program in the spring that helped create an atmosphere of culture and academia within the queer community.

"So returning to that original question, is UTEP a gay - friendly campus?

"Yes it is!

"[A]nd I'm proud to be a part of that change."

¡Ora, UTEP! ¡Ora, MEChA! ¡Adelante, DESTINO!
