The UTEP Library's Coordinator, Mr. Juan J. Alvarez, writes The UTEP Prospector!

For all he may be sacked for exercising his constitutional right to do so :)

This snippet is adapted from his letter to the editor of 4/2/09, online version:

"Guns on campus

"I have been hearing what I consider peculiar arguments about the right to carry a weapon on campus recently, particularly as expressed by Mr. Jeffrey Shepherd early last week.

"They sound familiar to the hysteria, which opposed concealed -- carry permits originally.

"I do not fear any law - abiding citizen who has undergone the necessary classes and training for a concealed weapon permit.

"Apparently UTEP recognizes that right as it has always provided Texas Concealed Handgun Training to the community through PACE.

"To train the citizens of El Paso in properly exercising this right and then denying those citizens the same right on campus smells of hypocrisy.

"Perhaps UTEP will guarantee the safety of any person who steps on campus -- some do enjoy relinquishing personal responsibility."
