"Carrying a handgun at UTEP could become a reality if Texas lawmakers pass a bill legalizing concealed weapons on campus.

"If passed, bill S.B. No. 1164 filed by state Rep. Joe Driver, R - Garland and state Sen. Jeff Wentworth would become effective Sept. 1.

"Eleven senators, including state Rep.[??] Chente Quintanilla, D - El Paso, have authored the bill, which was filed Feb. 26.

"State Sen. Eliot Shapleigh, D - El Paso, is opposed to the bill.

"Shapleigh said, Some places should ban guns -- high schools, courthouses and colleges. Do we really want people packing heat to basketball games? "
