Ms. Katherine Jass López on Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Cantú
"Bishop tackles different versions, translations of Bible in TOT session"
Adapted from this original source: Today's Catholic. Friday, April 10, 2009.
"By explaining the history of the origins of the Old and New Testaments, Bishop Cantú hoped to give the YA's a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Bible.
The author then quotes him as telling us:
"It's important to have some historical information regarding the Palestinian Canon and the Alexandrian Canon, the Hebrew and the Greek Septuagint, respectively.
"This tells us why the Catholic Bible has seven more books in the Old Testament than does the Protestant, or Hebrew Scriptures."
She then goes on to say:
"Looking at the Old Testament, Bishop Cantú broke down the terminology of the Old Testament."
The good bishop now tells us:
"The Alexandrian Canon contained 46 books, written in Greek, known as the Septuagint for the number LXX, the council of 70 who decided on this list.
"The Palestinian Canon contained 39 books, written in Hebrew and Aramaic; this version is used by Jews and Protestants.
"Deutero - canonical (second canon) books, refers to the seven books in the Alexandrian Canon and were written in later than most of the other Old Testament writings.
"Our Catholic Bible follows the Alexandrian Canon."
Way to go, your excellency! :)
