"Well, if you dare to act, the devil may avoid you."

Japanese Imperial Navy Admiral Matome Ugaki's philosophical response to projected suicide attack on US invasion fleet off the Philippines 66 years ago this October...

Meanwhile, Admiral Takijiro Onishi was organizer of a Kamikazi Special Attack Corps -- to help the Japanese fleet action against American vessels involved in the Philippines operation.

"Onishi was the brilliant, volatile air expert who had once slapped a geisha and dispatched Japanese POWs to their deaths, each for the same crime -- insufficient attention to duty..."

NOTE: We read elsewhere that the geisha in question was sullen. And in public to boot!

And as for the Japanese POWS?

Even worse! They were experienced Japanese combat pilots who had escaped from an Allied POW camp and were mistakenly convinced they would be welcomed back home to fly again.

They were, so to speak!

To fly one - way daylight reconnaissance missions over Port Moresby, and be automatically blown out of the sky in the process.

Their crime?

They forgot that Japanese military were forbidden to allow themselves to be taken prisoners by the enemy.

Source for both of these items: Page 183 of Evan Thomas' Sea of Thunder, published in 2006.

Yet, the Kamikazes came to do damage aginst the American Fleet off Okinawa in 1945!

Source: the footnote on the bottom of page 332:

"At Okinawa, the Japanese sunk thirty - four war ships, the largest a destroyer.

"Another 368 ships were damaged, including eight carriers, four escort carriers, ten battleships, five cruisers and sixty - three destroyers..."

"Theology as if Heaven Matters"

Adapted from the October 2010 Newsletter of The Coming Home Network International..

"We are all on our journey to heaven, whether cradle Catholics or adult converts to the Church.

"But one of the most important marks of all those seeking the Church from the outside is their engagement with theology.
.

"Defined by St. Anselm as faith seeking understanding -- fides quarens intellectum -- theology is important to Christians because they believe in truth.

"Their belief in particular truths taught in Sacred Scripture and in Christian history is rooted in a Person who is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).

"The purpose of studying theology is ultimately to know the person of the Son of God and through Him to be united to the Father of all.

"The joys of theology can be many.

"It can lead to a deeper understanding of the mysteries of the faith that alone can satisfy.

"It can allow a person to see connections between different truths such as how the Incarnation was the necessary background for the Eucharist.

"And in a practical sense, it can afford a deeper penetration into the faith that aids us in getting a better perspective on the world in which we are living.

"Yet theology also can be a precarious business.

"It can lead to the pride of clinging to pet theories, or the love of debate for its own sake rather than the pursuit of truth.

"It can lull its practitioners into the sleep of intellectual knowledge alone..."

Folks, it just keeps on getting better and better!

"What does the Church teach about the private ownership of fire arms by the the civilian population for the purpose of self - defense?''

A snippet from:

The November - December - 2010 edition of This Rock magazine. Ms. Peggy Fry provides us with the answer to this one.

"The Church does not have a definitive teaching on the private ownership of firearms.

"However, the Church does support the right to possess firearms for the legitimate defense of the common good of the family."

Ms. Frye now quotes from the following document:

Holy See Delegation to the International Conference on Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in all Its Aspects, July 11, 2001.

Here's what she quotes from this document:

"Unfortunately, however, it is impossible to ban all kinds of small arms and light weapons.

"In a world marked by evil ... the right of legitimate defense by means of arms exists.

"This right can become a serious duty for those who are responsible for the lives of others, for the common good of the family or of the civil community.

"This right alone can justify the possession or transfer of arms..."

"Kurita was not a forward - leaning commander.

"In June 1942, at the Battle of Midway, when two of the cruisers under his command had collided as they were evading a submarine, Kurita had left them behind as he retired from the battle.

"Kurita was criticized for not standing by the cripples.

"At Imperial General Headquarters, the gossip was that Kurita would only attack when directly ordered -- that he needed his butt kicked -- shiri o tataubekida.

"And yet, by June 1944, he had been given a great command, overall responsibility for the IJN's heaviest guns, a fleet comprised of most of the navy's battleships and cruisers..."

"The last Catholic country in Europe...!"

Malta!

It was indeed...

Sister Helen phoning Janice from Malta...

Meanwhile ... as the desperately ill Janice continues:

"[M]y husband, who had been diagnosed with prostrate cancer...

"When they told him that he did not have a good enough faith,

"he replied with a quote from St. Paul.

The Quote!

"Trophimus I left ill at Miletus (2 Timothy 4:20)."

From the Janice S. Lockwood, Ph. D. memoir I Have Come Home, in the October 2010 Newsletter of "The Coming Home Network International."

"I think it was the next morning when my telephone rang.

"It was Sr. Helen from Malta.

"[S]he began, Hello, darling. I've just had a thought. Why don't you contact a local priest and ask him to pray about your illness -- ask him to anoint you?

"Protestant friends had already surrounded me.

"They strongly believed that our great and wonderful God, who is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20), could heal me.

"Quoting Isaiah 53:5, With His stripes we healed, they believed these words to be an unconditional promise to all those who believe.

"Nevertheless, it appeared that the Lord wasn't intervening in the way they would have liked.

"They blamed me for not having enough faith after they'd anointed with some cooking oil.

"They also had the same attitude toward my husband, who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and was growing worse.

"When they told him that he did not have a good enough faith, he replied with a quote from St. Paul: Trophimus I left ill at Miletus.

"Sr. Helen told me not to allow myself to be judged in such a way.

"[S]he told me. Let God be God. Anyway it can't do any harm to contact a Catholic priest..."

New University President Ken Star gives a historical sketch!

On the Baylor tradition...

A random snippet from the magazine First Things -- November 2010.

"Baylor's
motto for all its 165 years has been Pro Ecclesia, Pro Texana -- for the church and for Texas.

"Quintessentially American, Baylor's ecclesiastical tradition is deeply respectful of individual conscience.

"The Baylor tradition honors what Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson eloquently called the one fixed star in our constitutional constellation -- freedom of the mind.

"Early in the history of the New World, upholders of this tradition set their faces against the state establishment of religious communities.

"This tradition, a powerful one, is exemplified by Roger Williams, a Baptist who, in search of religious freedom, fled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony to found Providence Plantation as a haven of religious liberty..."

Rancho Campo del Gato = location of the final 1945 to 1950 - era Karankawa Indian mitotes?!

Yeah!

The Texas newspaper, the Brownsville Herald, tells us so...

Well, o.k.!

Sort of...

"... a secluded area called El Gato, south of what is now Alamo and Donna..."

These random snippets are adapted from a fascinating interview by the Herald's ace reporter Travis Whitehead with Enrique Gonzalez, titled "Gonzalez believes he is part of Karankawa Indian lineage."

Original article posted online 2009 - 09 - o5 @ 21:35:38.

"While numerous sources claim the Karankawa were driven to extinction by the mid - 1800s, Gonzalez claims descent from a band of the tribe that retreated into a secluded area called El Gato, south of what is now Alamo and Donna.

"Gonzalez says that by the mid - 1900s, the Karankawas who had moved into this little village had spread into the surrounding communities, but they still congregated around a huge mesquite tree for their mitotes, the Karankawa version of a pow - wow.

"Gonzalez remembers his father taking him to these mitotes when he was just a boy, and he'd watch as between five and 10 Karankawas danced.

"He remembers tall powerful figures wearing only loin cloths and moving in rhythmic circles, arms with titanic hands rising into the air, huge bare feet stepping mightily into the ground, dust sticking to perspiring skin.

"They slapped tambourines, with flattened coke bottle tops attached to them to eject loud metallic sounds, into the air while the dancers moved in rhythm to drums..."

But!

"Tony Zavaleta
, anthropology professor at U.T. Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, is skeptical of Gonzalez's claims."

Instead!

"[H]e said . It's not impossible, but it's highly unlikely. Karankawa Indians were gone for the most part in the early historic period. Gone, disappeared. What information does he have to lead him to believe that he has a direct connection ...?"

Yet!

"If Gonzalez's claim is correct, the lifeway of the Karankawa has continued to evolve well into the 21st Century..."

Good points all, ladies and gentlemen! :)

"...You are El Cajónero?"

"Frank, a long time ago when my grandfather was a young man, the Mexican government would not send soldiers to protect people from Indians, and it refused to allow anyone out here to own guns.

"So they made bows and arrows.

"But they were no match for the Indians. and got slaughtered.
