Adapted from: a submission by Señor Juan J. Torres to The San Antonio EXPRESS - NEWS, Letters to the Editor section, Tuesday, September 25, 2007.

The above quote is from his uncle, a WW II veteran.

Juan had asked his uncle "if all Mejicanos were brave during the war?"

And the uncle responded as above: "Son, don't believe that only we won the war.

"There were a lot of Anglo boys and other races that were very brave and just, and to this day I still respect all of them for how well they served our country."

Torres goes on to relate:

"When I served with the Army in Vietnam, I found my uncle's statement to be true -- there are good and just men in all races in any war, and life as well.

"I greatly respect [critics of Burn's WW II PBS documentary], but I cannot boycott the PBS miniseries The War.

"I agree Hispanics have been snubbed because of the program's omission of their service during the war, but my indignation is not enough to overcome the respect I have for soldiers whose stories are being told -- regardless of race.

"May future documentaries reflect all soldiers' contributions to our country."

"COMMONLY BELIEVED MYTHS"

#1. The Myth of the Communist Paradise on Earth

"TRUTH. Today we have a very good example of the manipulation of history by Communism with [the Communists'] distortion and falsification of facts.

"For the past several years, Russia has been rewriting her history books, showing that what they had taught for the past 70 years as true, in actuality was false.

"In fact, the peasants and the workers rebelled against Communism and were massacred by the millions.

"The newspapers in [today's] Russia have made it common knowledge that during the communist period all the Russian Orthodox bishops were members of the KGB.

"While at the same time, a Russian presidential commission report released in November 1996 charged that 200,000 clergy were murdered under Soviet rule in a horrific cycle of crucifixions, scalpings, and torture.

Clergymen were crucified on churches' holy gates, shot, strangled, and doused in water in winter until they froze to death, said Alexander Yakolev, chairman of the Commission for the Rehabilitation of the victims of Political repression.

"The massacre of millions of people is the real truth in contrast to what had been called the Peoples' Paradise."

"A EUCHARISTIC INSTRUCTION"

Archbishop Daniel N. DiNardo starts his crack-down!!

Archdiocese of Galveston - Houston, June 10, 2007.

"... The following [10] regulations are to be faithfully observed in every church and chapel and posted in all sacristies."

"2. Eucharistic Ministers should be appropriately dressed when distributing Communion during the liturgy.

"On several occasions I have directed that men, including young men, must wear a coat and tie and women modest dresses or pant suits.

"This directive is to be observed even for Youth Masses.

"8. Eucharistic bread made from wheat and water alone is the only valid bread for the Eucharist.

"Homemade breads crumble easily and it is difficult to keep sizeable fragments from falling to the floor.

"The use of traditional hosts prevents this and maintains the proper decorum and respect for the sacramental presence of Jesus.

"9. The manner in which one dresses for Mass, even on vacation, is a reflection of profound belief in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

"Prayerful silence in church before the Mass begins is the proper and fitting preparation for celebrating this great mystery of faith.

"The traditional genuflection before the tabernacle is an act of adoration which witnesses to belief in th epresence of the risen Christ in the Sacrament.

"If the tabernacle is not in the sanctuary of the Church, a profound bow towards the altar is an appropriate sign of reverence.

"10. Finally, I want to make clear to everyone that the use of Extraordinary Ministers is approved by the Holy Father, contrary to rumors one hears from tme to time.

"Diocesan bishops have been given the authority to allow Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion in their diocese and the bishops alone regulate their ministry within liturgical celebrations.

"Those who deny that Extraordinary Ministers are approved by the Church are in conflict with the authority of the Church."

"People who have no faith leave their vocations"

Adapted from: Miles Jesu Monthly, December 2006, www.milesjesu.com

"The Epiphany has many different aspects.

"An important one is the faith and perseverance of the Three Wise Men in the following of the star.

"They were moved by sheer faith because they did not know exactly where they were going.

"They had only a glimpse, an idea.

"Their faith was tried, too, because the star disappeared.

"But when they lost the star, they didn't lose their enthusiasm.

"They consulted the experts in the revelation of God in Scripture.

"That's how they knew the Savior would come from Bethelem.

"Then they were able to continue their journey with no star, with no inspiration."

WE ALL HAVE A STAR TO BEGIN WITH...

"This is a very beautiful example for us today which we need to follow.

"Yes, we have a star in our vocation at the beginning, whether it is priesthood, religious life, total dedication as a lay person, or marriage.

"But how many times the star of our vocation disappears!

"And what do we do?

"People who have no faith leave their vocations: priests, sisters, married people -- it has become the thing to do... priests want to be laymen, laymen want to be priests; men want to be women, and women want to be men..."

"2. Order No. 11 and the Aftermath"

Adapted from: Wellman, Paul I. A Dynasty of Western Outlaws. New York: Doubleday and Company, Inc., 1961.

Pages 45 - 49.

"Quantrill may have believed that his adroit leadership in the sacking of Lawrence [Kansas] would be recognized and rewarded by the Confederate government, but is so he was bitterly disappointed.

"Far from gaining him favor, that butchery was viewed with horror by the South and repudiated by it.

"Whatever chance he had for recognition as a legitimate officer of the Confederacy was destroyed.

"More than ever he was on his own, despised by blue and gray alike.

"Two days after the massacre came a thunderclap.

"General Thomas Ewing, commanidng Union forces on the Missouri border, issued the now famous -- or infamous -- Order No. 11.

"By it the Missouri counties of Jackson, Cass, Bates, and part of Vernon were depopulated, save for small areas in the immediate environs of garrisoned towns.

"Families, without regard to right or justice, or even loyalty to the Union cause, were forced by the military to leave their homes with what little they could carry, and go to seek shelter of some sort in whatever direction they might flee, while their belongings left behind were looted and their houses and grain fields burned.

"Yet the order was not Ewing's idea, and he issued it with relectance.

"It had been discussed before, but he expressed himself as greatly opposed to the measure, which he considered too cruel and drastic."

ENTER JIM LANE, A VIOLENT MAN ...

"The impetus that caused the order to be issued came from Kansas, and from Jim Lane, the archenemy of the Missourians, in particular.

"Lane was not only a partisan leader but a United States senator, elected in 1861, with the admission of Kansas as a state.

"He was a violent man.

"He murdered Gaius Jenkins in 1857 in a quarrel over some land, uisng his powerful position to get himself exonerated.

"Since the beginning of the Civil War he had divided his time between making raids across the [Kansas - Missouri] border and visits to Washington in his capacity as [a U.S.] senator, where he seems to have had a strange influence in high places."

BALEFUL EFFECTS OF ORDER NO. 11...

"Order No. 11 reduced the population of Cass County from 10,000 to 600; and there were even fewer left in Bates County.

"Order No. 11 was Lane's means of revenging himself on the Missouri people.

"As a military measure it was expected to drive out the guerrillas because they could no longer subsist on the country.

"In this respect it was only partly successful.

"What Order No. 11 was completely successful in doing was to create bitterness that for a generation was not entirely healed.

"Even families with Union sympathies were in many cases alienated."

ORDER NO. 11 AND THE JAMES GANG, ETC....

"And this should be underlined: The amazing ability of Jesse James and his band of outlaws to operate for fifteen years after the [Civil] war out of this very area which had been so terribly stricken was due to the resentments still burning.

"People who had suffered from Order No. 11 were slow to inform against former guerrillas who had become bandits, out of sheer antagonism toward the authority that had ruined them."

My, oh my!

Hey, fellas, where have we seen this same sort of thing in more recent U.S. military history?? (heh, heh!)

"A new agenda??"

"For the good Cardinal?"

"Wow! ¡Guau!"

First source:writer Jordan McMorrough's article in Today's Catholic, August 31, 2007, "New hall a symbol of increased vocations," www.satodayscatholic.org .

On the front page a colored photo bears this caption, regarding what was going on that day 120 miles northeast of Brakcettville, Texas:

"Archbishop José H. Gomez looks on as Cardinal Francis E. George, OMI, of Chicago and Archbishop Emeritus Patrick F. Flores bless the St. Thomas the Apostle Chapel in the newly dedicated Archbishop Patrick F. Flores Residence Hall at Assumption Seminary on Aug. 15."

Regarding Francis Cardinal George himself, we read this within the article:

"The cardinal serves on the Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments .

"He is also vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and is a member of the USCCB Comittee on the Liturgy."

O.K., so far? Well, then, let's just drop back about a year and a half, to February, 2006......

Second source: Rev. Greg J. Markey's article "Cardinal George and Liturgical Reform," in the February 2006 edition of the Homiletic & Pastoral Review.

The author comments that a number of Catholic experts are writing articles and studies healthily critical of the so - called liturgical reform of the Catholic Mass dating back to the 1960s and the Council of Vatican II.

As Father Markey says towards the end of his excellent commenatry:

"Now that forty years have passed since the Council, Cardinal George and others are giving these healthy critiques which would not have been possible at the time of the Council.

Verbal monologues vs. symbolic gestures and silence...

"He notes that many studies are now recognizing the roots of 20th Century liturgical reforms lie in the Enlightenment:a liturgical rationalism which emphasized verbal monologues rather than symbolic gestures and silence, thereby demystifying the rite of its visual splendor..."

Good for you, Reverend!

And with the Enlightenment serving as a sort of fairy godmother all these past 40 years, no wonder we are in the mess we are in.....

By Jeff Janca, The Brackett News, Thursday, September 13, 2007.

"For over 60 years, a West Texas High School has allowed an elective class in the Bible to be taught in their classrooms.

"When I was living in that West Texas area, I was asked to teach a Bible Old @ New Testament course in a different High School.

"It was a wonderful experience and the students enjoyed it.

"What amazed me as I began to teach that class was the lack of Bible knowledge of the students, especially many of the Christian students.

"By the time the years were over, the students became acquainted with the characters, the history, and the beauty of the Bible.

"What about you?

"Do you know the background and the people of the Bible?

"Do you have a limited knowledge of the Bible?

In any case, you were always friendly and out - going to everyone on our floor: Hamid,Yixin (Chen?), Alfredo, me, Ray, Rene, Gabriela, Omar all of us.

Man, you were always there when I had a silly problem like some piece of furniture or whatever I had to get rid of fast, stuff like that.

A ningund prestar mis armas,

"I found myself in the throes of post - abortion syndrome"

Source: Carolyn Kollegger's article, "A Good Girl Who Went Through Bad Times," in Patrick Madrid's Suprised By Truth 2.

Page 53.

"Soon I hit that point I needed to hit -- rock bottom: I found myself in the throes of post - abortion syndrome.

"It's real and terrifying, but no abortion provider ever warned me about it, and every woman who has an abortion must one day reckon with it in some form.

"For me, it came on suddenly one evening: total despair that my babies were dead, and that I, their mommy, was responsible for that.

"I ran out to our boat dock, crying hysterically, moaning, and screaming through my sobs for God to forgive me, to give me another chance, and to give those babies back.

"My grief was overwhelming.

"I couldn't live with myself, and I couldn't live without my babies.

"I went to our bedroom, where Erwin kept a loaded gun...."

As author -- and convert to Catholicism -- Steve Clifford tells us in his article included in Patrick Madrid's Surprised by Truth 2, pages 113 - 114:

"These official LDS teachings that there were at least three gods and that God the Father was merely an exalted man in yonder heavens I had always taken for granted.

"But as I studied the issue, my polytheistic views vanished."

"Summer Missions, 2007 !"

The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, are still growing by leaps and bounds!

www.sistersofmary.org

As Sister Maria Gemma, O.P. puts it in her flyer, after the regular school routine was over for the summer, "We fanned out across the country, traveling to communities that rarely see Sisters wearing the religious habit.

"And we were privileged to plant seeds that will one day -- in God's good time -- bear rich fruit for Our Lord and for His Church..."

Amen to that, sister !!

Still believe the USA lost the Vietnam War?

Viernamese Katrina survivors all set to rock!

AARP The Magazine, September / October 2007, has a surprise just for you! www.aarpmagazine.org

From: "Katrina: The Untold Story."

"One of post - Katrina's most celebrated models of recovery is the New Orleans neighborhood of Village de l'Est, which was settled in the 1970s by Vietnamese refugees.

"The residents of this tight - knit community were accustomed to helping one another through crises -- and as soon as Katrina's floodwaters subsided, that mutual - aid system kicked into overdrive.

"The three priests at Mary Queen of Vietnam Catholic Church badgered the electric - utility company until power was restored.

"They provided buffet - style meals for returning homeowners.

"And they immediately began mapping out a long - term plan that includes a 300 - unit senior housing ocmplex.

We set the church as a staging ground, so that people could find comfort, says Father Luke Nguyen, one of the priests.

"That made it much easier for an estimated 80 percent of their parishioners to return to their communities."

Elsewhere in this article, we read that of New Orleans Katrina survivors over 65, only 40 percent have returned.

Of those younger, only 48 per cent.

"Just a little something to think about."
